Lighting a Billion Lives© is proud to have one of India’s most accomplished sportsmen, VVS Laxman, as its brand ambassador.
Laxman came on board to support the Programme’s efforts in bringing clean lighting solutions to under served communities in India and the world, at a special Lighting a Billion Lives© event, held during TERI’s 15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit in February 2015.
Well known for his superb timing, the ability to hit against the spin and his supple wrist work, Laxman is considered to be one of India’s top batsmen. In a career spanning 16 years of high quality cricket, Laxman played 134 test matches and 86 one day internationals. He was famously called the “Australian Specialist”, having played the majority of his matches against Australia and scoring his highest set of runs, including a double century against them.
It was at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2001 that he hit an extraordinary 281 runs in the second innings, setting an unprecedented score in the history of international cricket and becoming one of the most celebrated tales of Indian cricket. The innings is also ranked the sixth best Test innings ever by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
In 2011, Laxman was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour.
In 2012, he retired from formal international cricket but continues to play domestic cricket for Hyderabad and the Indian Premier League.
In 2015, V V S Laxman was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree by TERI University during its seventh convocation ceremony.
