Conserving Biodiversity through Solar Lanterns

District: Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan Village: Bhid

This village, bordering the Ranthambore National Park did not have electricity. The forest department was apprehensive about electrification since it could lead to the accidental electrocution of animals. Tiger Watch, partnered with TERI in facilitating the provision of solar lanterns to this area and the impact is palpable.

The solar lanterns have enabled villagers to supplement their income and built a sense of trust with Tiger Watch officials. They are more cooperative and provide vital information to Tiger Watch officials on poachers, which has been a big help in the conservation efforts that have been initiated in the area. “We are very happy with the increased income opportunities that have developed as a result of having these lanterns. We also keep an eye on animals and poachers for Tiger Watch’, says Mukesh Chandra Gurjar, the appointed entrepreneur to manage the solar charging station in the village.
